The Fountain House was founded in 1944 as a support group to help those living and coping with mental illnesses. Originally known as “We are Not Alone”, the charity purchased a large building with a fountain in front in 1948, and thus the Fountain House was born. The charity provides people with mental illnesses affordable housing, continued education and work opportunities. The foundation believes that the stigma of mental illness must be lifted and that society should help this population cope with their challenges and enable them to become productive members of society. Their focus is on each individual to develop their unique talents and/or skills, earn their degrees, obtain appropriate employment and gain the self confidence they need to be a part of every day life and their local communities. The Fountain House continues its efforts on a global scale by teaming up with the World Health Organization to bring mental illness awareness and assistance to all of those who need it around the world.
